![]() History of Waldport In the 19th Century members of the Aisi Indian tribe lived along the Alsea River and Bay. The town of Waldport is situated on an old Aisi Burial Ground, and the point south of town bears the name of Chief Yaquina John, one of the last surviving members of the Aisi tribe. New Bridge over Alsea River ~ Waldport Oregon The first European settlers arrived down the Alsea River in the 1870's, after most of the Aisi tribe had been relocated to nearby reservations. David and Orlena Ruble used the nighttime stars as survey guides to lay out the city in 1879. When it was chartered in 1890, the Rubles named the community to reflect the surrounding forests ("wald" is German for wood) and the bay's natural harbor. Waldport began to thrive in 1918 when the United States Army built a railroad line to the town. Local spruce forests were logged to provide lumber to build airplanes during World War I. With the end of the war, private logging companies used the line until it was abandoned in 1935. Logging remains a primary occupation in the area, along with fishing and farming. The sawmills and salmon canneries once located here, however, have moved to nearby towns better equipped to transport local products to markets around the world. |
